A Most Unexpected Way to Use InfoReady
You already know InfoReady’s workflow software can be used in a variety of higher-ed applications from limited submissions to internal funding applications, but have you ever considered drone registration? Yes, you read that right — unmanned aircraft!
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established laws and regulations governing the use of unmanned aircraft, such as drones, and the associated communication links and components that control the unmanned aircraft. The laws require registration of the aircraft for non-hobbyist applications and the use of an unmanned aircraft for higher-ed research use does not qualify as a hobbyist application.
Some InfoReady higher-ed customers are taking advantage of the software’s flexibility and prevalence throughout the institution to use it for drone registration — ensuring their organizations meet the necessary FAA requirements.
For example, Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) uses InfoReady to provide an approval process for members of the University community to purchase and employ unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for SVSU-sanctioned activities both on and off SVSU properties as authorized by the May 4, 2016 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Memorandum, entitled "Educational Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)" and in accordance with the SVSU Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Policy. “We found using InfoReady was an efficient way for faculty to understand and upload the required information, route applications to the UAS committee for approval, and gather the required reports as mandated by law,” says Janet Rentsch, Director of Sponsored Programs.
Another InfoReady higher-ed customer has gone so far as to establish an FAA Drone Committee that reviews applications submitted through InfoReady. A new application must be filled out for each research project in which faculty or staff plans to use a drone or other unmanned aircraft in their research.
